Counselling and Psychotherapy in Dumfries and Galloway - Dumfries, Amisfield DG1 South West Scotland

Welcome and thank you for visiting my website.

I'd like to start with a tribute to Stephen Hawking (1946 - 2018).

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.”

I'm often asked what is existential therapy and here Hawkins describes it beautifully and if I, as a therapist, were in any way were to help clients find that attitude to life, I'd be doing a good job!

I am a Cognitive Existential Therapist. My initial training was in Existential Psychotherapy and Counselling . However, I have since continued my professional development in CBT. This form of therapy is still being sold as the best and it's all that is available from most NHS services. Despite it's many developments or waves, I feels strongly that it still lacks substance. It does get results for some people, especially for specific problems worked at over a few sessions. However, and I believe this is born out by the research, sustained results after more than 6 months are often disappointing.

Most therapeutic aims change the way, or at least, challenge the way we think about things. Whilst there is no doubt this is effective and reduces symptom of depression and anxiety, without an existential dimension to therapy, improvements can often be short lived. For more about existential therapy see my Dummies Guide to Existential Psychotherapy at the top of 'About Therapy' page.

Therapy can be useful when dealing with a crisis or immediate concern; It also offers support with longer term difficulties.

Are you dealing with a crisis or immediate concern?
Or needing support with ongoing difficulties?

Are you feeling anxious and low much of the time? Is there more conflict than you can cope with in your relationships at home and or at work? Are you overly concerned about the future? Have you lost interest in the things you used to enjoy? Do you struggle to self-motivate in your personal life and or your career?

Could you benefit from a place to take some time-out?

to explore thoughts and feelings...
to get back on a front foot again...

Deciding you need to talking to a counsellor or psychotherapist is difficult enough. Then you have to find a good one and one you can afford too. This can be daunting, especially as finding the right one is both desirable and, as research has confirmed, is essential for the therapy to be effective.

I believe therapy is about care and attention; it is confidential conversations about what matters most; it is talk that elucidates, clarifies and heals. I am committed to the emotional well-being of my clients.

To help decide if I would be a good therapist for you, you can arrange a single consultation session. That's so that you can meet me and get a sense of whether I'm the kind of therapist and, more importantly, a person you could talk to on an ongoing basis for either short term counselling or open-ended psychotherapy.

50 minute sessions from only 40

Individuals
40 for students and people on low income during the day
50 - 65 for evening appointments, depending on circumstances.

Couples
65 - 85

"For what its worth, I think you are good at what you do. You are very real! Not afraid to be devils advocate, or to push difficult buttons when needed. You are also kind, and giving of yourself-I like it that you refer at times to your own experiences - it
fleshes out the whole thing which for me at least needs to be deconstructed a bit i.e. fucked up patient on couch talking to expert analyst behind desk. Anyway, I've just completed 370 miles round and about the south west UK visiting friends and family and
have done much thinking over the miles a lot of which centered about my father. I've decided that although he's not evil; he is a bit of a cunt, but that he can't help it either!"
