I'd like to start with a tribute to Stephen Hawking (1946 - 2018).

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.”

I'm often asked what is existential therapy and here Hawkins describes it beautifully and if I, as a therapist, were in any way were to help clients find that attitude to life, I'd be doing a good job!

I am a Cognitive Existential Therapist. My initial training was in Existential Psychotherapy and Counselling . However, I have since continued my professional development in CBT. This form of therapy is still being sold as the best and it's all that is available from most NHS services. Despite it's many developments or waves, I feels strongly that it still lacks substance. It does get results for some people, especially for specific problems worked at over a few sessions. However, and I believe this is born out by the research, sustained results after more than 6 months are often disappointing.

Most therapeutic aims change the way, or at least, challenge the way we think about things. Whilst there is no doubt this is effective and reduces symptom of depression and anxiety, without an existential dimension to therapy, improvements can often be short lived. Therapy can be useful when dealing with a crisis or immediate concern; It also offers support with longer term difficulties.

Deciding you need to talking to a counsellor or psychotherapist is difficult enough. Then you have to find a good one and one you can afford too. This can be daunting, especially as finding the right one is both desirable and, as research has confirmed, is essential for the therapy to be effective.

That's so that you can meet me and get a sense of whether I'm the kind of therapist and, more importantly, a person you could talk to on an ongoing basis for either short term counselling or open-ended psychotherapy.

50 minute sessions from only 40

40 for students and people on low income during the day
50 - 65 for evening appointments, depending on circumstances.
